I might not be a big fan of flying, but love traveling. For years I’ve lived a 10-hour (or longer) drive from family and friends. That meant a lot of weekend trips home for me. Now that my home base is in the same city as my family, I’m looking forward to traveling to more new places and taking more weekend trips. As a chronic over-packer and airline fees increasing, I’ve had to learn to pair it down. Now, I only bring the essentials (and maybe an extra outfit or two).
For short trips, those less than a week, you have to pack smart + follow TSA regulations if you don’t plan to check your bag. Don’t let packing stress keep quell your excitement for your next trip, follow the guidelines below! You can get be compact without sacrificing style.
Toiletries: For a short work trip or weekend getaway, you don’t need to be lugging around full-size bottles, especially if you’re flying. If you don’t plan to use items provided by your hotel, you’ll want to make sure you have shampoo, conditioner, body wash/soap, face wash, and any other products you use on a daily basis. Don’t forget deodorant + whatever you may need to shave (if you’re flying, don’t forget a facial spray to stay fresh and hydrated – this is my favorite).
I’m big into using my own products, so I typically buy mini-versions or grab a few sets of empty bottles to put my products in. These toiletries plus your makeup, toothbrush/paste, and any cotton balls you may need should all go into toiletry bags to save the rest of luggage from any leakage. Thanks to Ipsy, I have a bunch of bags I use for this and my jewelry.
Clothes: What clothes you bring really depend on what the intent of your trip is. For a business trip, you’ll want both clothes for work and things to wear on your downtime. Assuming you’ll be gone for the full work week, you’ll want one pair of work appropriate pants, a skirt (or second pair of work pants), one dress, two top pieces (cardigan or blazer), and four tops. If you have any business dinners, you’ll want additional dresses or pieces that can easily convert from day to night. You’ll also need outfits for your travel days and things to wear during your free time whether that is sight-seeing or just lounging around your hotel. Two pairs of neutral flats, and a solid pair of heels/wedges, and undergarments will round out your packing list.
If you’re going on a weekend getaway, your packing list will look a little different. Aside from your traveling outfits, you’ll want two jean (or shorts) + top outfits or two causal dresses. You’ll want two additional dresses or tops for a night out on the town. Don’t forget any jackets, accessories or shoes you may need. Try to pack items that are neutral like a jean jacket and tan booties or black sandals. Again you’ll want to pack any undergarments you may need plus one extra.
Other Things: Aside from clothes + toiletries, there are a few other important items you’ll want to remember. Anything you use on a day-to-day basis + and of course any documents you need to travel are absolute must-packs. Be sure to make a list so you don’t forget any of these items, either:
- Chargers + batteries
- Entertainment for travel + headphones
- Hair appliances
- Any medications you may be taking
