We all know how fast a social network can skyrocket into the mainstream. That story is no less true for Snapchat. This unique social experience allows people to share things in a way no other network does, temporarily. Since its launch in 2011, Snapchat has added more features + become more than just a way to communicate with your friends; it’s a way to communicate + experience the world in a way you physical can’t.
Snapchat as a news source
Earlier this year, Snapchat introduced its discovery feature. This feature allows you to explore content from nine different editorial teams, like CNN, ESPN, and Cosmopolitan. However, this is not Snapchats greatest news contribution.
With the expansion of the Live feature last August, users are now able to view snaps uploaded from users in other places + events. New York City, Carnival, Bonaroo, and MLB Wednesdays are a few examples of Live stories Snapchat shows all of its users.
Yesterday, the Greece Votes story caught my eye. Sunday was the day Greek citizens voted on whether or not to accept more austerity measures from European creditors. Unlike its usual stories, the Greece votes story featured explanations of the situation + the voting options.
Never before (at least to my knowledge), has Snapchat informed users about a situation on its Live feature as well as organize submitted chats in such a way that you could follow the news story from start to finish.
Stories like this could give users all the basic information they might need to know about a specific event. I think it has great potential to catapult Snapchat as social network people look to for information. For an event like the Super Bowl, It could capture important plays + reactions. It would also be a great asset used how it was for Greece Votes to capture the US primary + 2016 Presidential election.
This type of story could revolutionize breaking news. Most people already turn to social media to get fast updates on breaking stories like the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombings. A story like that or the hunt for the escaped NY prison inmates could be updated via a Live story.
Whether it be by reporters + news entities or regular users, I think Snapchat could become a real place of news for citizens of the world. The ethics + regulations of such coverage is something the Snapchat team would need to figure out, but I know I’d watch more news coverage style stories.
