Traveling is one of the BEST things you can spend your money on. It expands your horizons, teaches you things about yourself you never knew, and allows you to recenter + recharge. While there are plenty of stateside destinations, everyone should travel abroad at least once in their life. I hope that in my life I’ll be able to visit dozens of European cities. While I’ve already made it to a few, I am counting down the days until I can venture out again. With a world full of wonder, I’ve narrowed down the ten areas you’re sure to love.
London – Having studied abroad in London, I can attest to its charm, diversity, and friendliness. London is the perfect spot for someone to start their international travel. The language is the same, the style of living is similar, and there is so much history + art to explore. It’s also perfectly located for day trips across the UK.
Ireland – Dublin is one of the best places I’ve ever traveled. It’s so great in fact that my next international trip will be a return to traipse across the whole country. The people of Ireland are so warm + friendly, the food is delicious, and the scenery is unmatched. It’s another great beginner destination + it’s easy to visit other parts of the UK (like Edinburgh, Scotland) from here.
Paris – I don’t know a millennial woman who doesn’t have Paris on her vision board. The City of Lights has been romanticized in TV, movies, and books. With so many landmarks to see + pastries to eat, Paris is a must-see for all. The French Rivera + Monaco are also a must-hit for me.
Italy – Italy has one of the richest + most historically relevant cultures in the world. There are so many great cities within Italy that you could get lost for months. A few on my list are Rome (and the Vatican), Florence, Naples, Amalfi, Verona, and Venice. Seems like I’ll be making some day trips. After this amazing story, Malta, a small country below the boot is definitely on my list.
Spain – Spain is another city with an amazing culture + people. The architecture + vibrancy of cities like Barcelona + Madrid are huge draws as are the food + beaches. Seeing as you’re already in Spain, why not hop on over and knock Portugal off you list, too.
Germany – In recent years, German has become a top destination for millennial travels. Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich have amazing architecture, great food, and, of course, Octoberfest. Traveling through Germany is like take a ride through your favorite fairytales, especially if you venture into the Black Forrest.
Greece – This is my number one travel destination. While I, of course, want to hit up Athens, I absolutely must go to the Greek Islands. Every since seeing Mamma Mia, Santorini + Mykonos have been on the top if my list. The crystal blue water, whitewashed homes, and sunny beaches make it a holiday dream. I wouldn’t hate a small detour to Cypress, Rhodes, or any other Greek Islands.
Benelux – This trifecta of countries is a hotspot for tourism – the most visited city probably being Amsterdam. The Netherlands has some truly unique scenery full of windmills, canals, and tulips. A hub for art, Holland is also the homeland of Gouda + other delicacies. Brussels is another must-visit Benelux destination. While in the neighborhood, I would want to head over to Copenhagen for a spell.
Iceland – Thanks to cheap flights + beautiful scenery Iceland has really grown as a travel hotspot. Iceland Air even offers stopovers free of charge when using their airline to get to other places in Europe. You can have an extended layover of 1-7 days as part of your travel itinerary.
Central Europe – This broad region is full of destination gems. After having been a part of numerous empires, these countries have formed unique identities + cultures to draw in tourist. Austria/Switzerland give you access to the Alps + beautiful countryside. Budapest + Prague are top cities of interest to me in this region as they are full of history + culture. I wouldn’t be able to leave the Central Europe region without a stop in beautiful Croatia.
While this list is by no means comprehensive, it is full of over 20 destinations you are sure to love + daydream about for years after visiting. What are you waiting for?
