There is an episode of Friends where the girls read a book that really speaks to them. It speaks to them so much so, that Jennifer Aniston’s character thinks it could have been called Be Your Own Wind Keeper, Rachel. Recently, I read a book by a different Rachel that spoke to me on that same level. Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis is one of THE most life-changing books I have ever read – and I read a lot of books geared towards helping women change their lives. I kept waiting for a section of the book to not speak to me + it never happened. One chapter was so real, I teared up at my desk.
The set up of this book is simple, each chapter begins with a lie women have been taught to believe. The chapter then details how that isn’t true using personal examples in Hollis’ life + ends with tips on mantras, tools, and anything else that helped Hollis overcome the lie in her life. Some of the lies are “something else will make me happy,” “‘no’ is the final answer,” and “I will never get past this.” By exploring these lies + more Girl, Wash Your Face dishes out some tough love to help you get to the life you want while loving yourself NOW. Below are some of my favorite excerpts + tidbits from the book.
Girl, Wash Your Face-isms
- Girl, Wash Your Face discusses the difference between unhappiness, sadness, and depression. Happiness is a choice we can all make – being content with what we have + where we are.
- “The only thing worse than giving up is wishing you hadn’t.” This advice is one of the things that stuck out to me most in the book. I can’t imagine watching someone else live my dream because they were willing to try just a little bit harder than I was.
- Hollis talks about how to achieve your goals. Her biggest secret? Be realistic. Don’t always create lofty unattainable goals. Strive for goals piece by piece and make promises, especially to yourself, that you can keep.
- “Someone else’s opinion of you is none of your business.” S/o to Denise.
No matter your age, no matter your life stage, do yourself a favor and dive into this book NOW! You will not regret it. I’m already applying the wisdom from Girl, Wash Your Face to my life + feeling more empowered to fight against the lies the world has taught me to believe every day.
