Back in July, I wrote a post about how to pack for a short trip (>8 days). But many times when we take trips, they are for longer than a few days. Sometimes they are weeks. This guide is for those 8+ day trips. Since going to London last summer, I have become pretty proficient at packing for longer trips. Just last week I had to pack up all of my things to come home for the holidays. In another week I will be moving to Texas. I had to pack three weeks worth of clothes while everything else could be packed in boxes. This is the strategy I used. It’s not the easiest task, but it is doable when you have a plan.
There are certain staples every wardrobe needs: jeans, a little back dress (LBD), classic white t-shirt, etc. Pack these things. Since they are all in neutral colors you will be able to wear them in many different outfit combinations. Since you will be gone for more than a week, you’ll need at least two pair of jeans (or shorts depending on the season), two pair of leggings, a LBD, a black, jean, or khaki skirt + maybe a neutral colored maxi skirt. You’ll also need things like a pair of black/brown flats or sandals, black heels, nude heels and/or wedges. If it is winter you may also need boots. You’ll also want classic accessories- gold. silver or pearls. Things that can match anything.
Bonus tip- You only need 1-2 purses. Take one to match black + one to match brown. You may also want a clutch, just in case.
Depending on how many weeks you will be gone, pick a color palate. For instance, when I was in London for four weeks, I used a color palate of red, green, and blue. I would choose a max of four colors. If you are going to be gone for more than two weeks, I am assuming you have access to a place to wash your clothes. With this color palate I brought pieces that will go with the basics. You’ll want a cardigan in each color, a simple shirt in every color + accessories in them (jewelry, scarves, etc.). Then you may want a dress in one or two colors, a pair of shoes in one color, a skirt or pants in one color + maybe leggings + a sweater in two (if it is cold). Using only a few colors will allow you to be able to mix + match your clothes to make many different outfits.
You’ll also want to pack the basic necessities. You need toiletries to last for your whole time gone unless you plan to buy them. You’ll want to make sure your make up, lotion and perfume would last the whole time. You’ll also want bras + panties. You’ll need at least enough panties for 3/4 of your trip (IF you have access to laundry, if not enough for your trip plus 1/3 more). You’ll want a few different bras. You’ll need a nude one, strapless one, a black one + then a fun one. You’ll also want enough socks for half your trip. You may also want a swim suit in case the need arises. Two if you know it will.
Other things you need to remember to pack are your chargers, any work you might need to do + some detergent- if they don’t supply it. If you have special events you know you will be attending such as a wedding or New Year’s Eve party, bring additional clothing for that specific occasion. Those don’t need to match your color palate.
