One of the nice things – geographically – about Memphis is that it is pretty close to other states. In fact, it only takes me about 15 minutes to get into Mississippi + only 45 to get to Arkansas. Main interstates run through the city which means it is quick to get to other cities. This makes it a great location for quick trips. Earlier this month, I took advantage of this fact and took a day trip to Oxford, MS.
Home to Ole Miss, Oxford is a little over an hour away from where I live in a southern suburb of Memphis + a very easy, pleasant drive. This wasn’t my first time in Oxford. However, I think the last time I was there I was maybe 14. Going as an adult + with a boyfriend was a fun experience + a nice little relationship test. Here are some of the things we did + some we weren’t able to do.
Where to Eat in Oxford
I’d be lying if I said a focus of this trip wasn’t heavily focused on the food. There are so many delicious places to eat in Oxford. Whether you want something fancy + refined or 100% down-home cooking. We sampled food from a few different places + it was all great. Ajax was one of our favorites. They serve homestyle southern food that is to die for. The boyfriend got chicken and dumplings with turnip greens + squash casserole. and I got a veggie plate which had grits (not sure if that event is a vegetable), broccoli and rice, and mashed potatoes. There is much amazing food to try on a day trip to Oxford, Ms. Here are some of our favorite places to eat:
- Ajax Diner
- Saint Leo (pizza)
- City Grocery
- Big Bad Breakfast
- South Depot Taco Shop
- The Oxford Canteen
- The Coop
- Chancellor’s House
- Oxford Burger Company
- Snack Bar
One of the places we ate was at a Chevron. I know what you’re thinking. That isn’t *exactly* on-brand for me. But, it is a classic Oxford spot that makes chicken on a stick that is shockingly delicious.
Where to Shop in Oxford
The thing Oxford is known for – aside from Ole Miss – is the town square. “The Square” is quaint yet vibrant. Many of the restaurants mentioned above can be found on it. It is a central hub for most of the activity + certainly the bulk of the shopping. From swanky department stores to funky boutiques, The Square as something for everyone. These are the places you must check out:
- Hinton and Hinton
- My Favorite Shoes
- Square Books
- Hemline Oxford
What to do on your Day trip to Oxford
When you get tired of eating + shopping, there is plenty else to do in Oxford. During the school year, check the University calendar for events open to the general public. Ole Miss has a lively + exciting theater + film program which means there are often shows + screenings to attend. My fave, Heather McMahan, got her BFA from Ole Miss + will be in September at the Lyric Theater for her tour. If theater isn’t your thing, the school has all the sports. Being part of the SEC, the football, baseball, basketball, and other programs are top-notch + attract big crowds.
If you’re trying to break away from campus + want to soak in the history, they have that, too. Head over to the home of William Faulkner for a visit. You can also pay a visit to his grave. Learn more about the civil rights struggles of the south with a visit to the Burns-Belfry Museum. Go even further back into history and learn about L.Q.C. Lamar at his historically-landmarked home.
Out of everything there is to do on a day trip in Oxford, MS, by + large my favorite was hanging out at The Graduate Oxford hotel. Honestly, I am looking for an excuse to stay the night in Oxford just so I can book a room. Not only was the hotel GORGEOUS, but it also featured the best rooftop bar, The Coop. The view was spectacular and so were the drinks. They made the best frosé I have ever had + you know that’s a tight field. It was cute, it was comfy, it was the perfect place to relax. They also had an adorable restaurant downstairs called Cabin 82 which was inspired by the Neshoba County fair. This is a must-visit spot for me.
With all it’s small-town charm, Oxford offers something for everyone. Take it from the rosé-lover with the sports fanatic boyfriend, we both enjoyed our trip. Head down to hungry + enjoy your day trip to Oxford, MS.
