One of my most favorite holiday activities is watching Christmas movies. It would not be a stretch to say my favorite movie is Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. There are so many movies out there that deserve our attention. But, we only have so much time we can devote to watching movies when there are so many other fun holiday activities we can do! To help us all out, I have compiled a list of the best Christmas movies. Don’t worry, I am not ranking them or pitting them head-to-head. I am designating one great movie per category that can help you choose which one you want to watch depending on your mood.
Best Chrismas Movies
Best Family Movie: Home Alone 2
In my opinion, the best of all the Christmas movies. Kevin McAlister is without his family again this Christmas, this time in New York. A “stolen” credit card, return of the wet bandits, and childhood ingenuity lead to another night of hijinks.
Best Classic: Christmas Vacation
Stressed by his lack of a Christmas bonus, Clark hosts his family for the holidays. The group of characters helps him see what the holidays are really about.
Best Rom-com: The Holiday
Two ladies unlucky in love switch sides of the Atlantic + houses to enjoy a holiday to themselves. They both learn some lessons + meet some special people on their journey of self-discovery.
Best TV Movie: 12 Men of Christmas
Sorry Candace Cameron Bure, Lifetime has my pick for favorite TV Christmas movie. An NYC publicist finds herself in Montana helping a fire crew raise money to get better equipment. It’s as predictable as you think but in the best way possible.
Best Streaming Movie: The Holidate
Streaming may be TV now, but it still got its own category. Watch Emma Roberts stumble through a year’s worth of holidays with a fake date… until the real feelings hit. Bonus points the star of our TV winner also appears in this film.
Best New Movie: Love Hard
Heather McMahan, need I say more? After being catfished, our protagonist sets out to find love + make the most out of her Christmas.
Most Nostalgic: Rudolf
I love a good claymation classic. You have to find time to watch this classic story and, if you have a little more, don’t forget the Island of Misfit Toys or The Year Without a Santa Claus.
Most Fun: Elf
No best Christmas movies list is complete without Elf. It just isn’t. Will Ferrell is in perfect form as the elf-adopted human looking to find his roots.
Saddest: The Family Stone
Looking to be sad this holiday season? Then this film is for you! It has an all-star cast + an incredible storyline.
Wouldn’t Be Christmas Without: The Grinch
Of course, I am referring to the Jim Carey version. Let your heart grow a few sizes in the story of a little girl convincing a grumpy monster to love Christmas + people again.
