We spend approximately one-third of our lives sleeping. That is a ton of time! That means I have spent almost 9.5 years of my life asleep! If we’re going to spend that much time in our beds, we need to try + make sure it is quality time. The best way to do that is having a good mattress + buying a new mattress when we need one.
When should you get a new mattress?
You should get a new mattress every 5-10 years depending on the quality of your original mattress. How well you take care of it, how often you sleep on it, and how often you rotate it are all factors. If your mattress is detracting from your quality of sleep, it is time to get a new one. My boyfriend + grandmother both recently bought this mattress + it is incredible! I highly recommend it.
What to consider when buying a new mattress
One of the most important things to consider when buying a new mattress is that it is an investment. The quality of your sleep affects the quality of your life. Let me say it again for all you night owls. The quality of your sleep affects the quality of your life. The mattress I bought after I graduated from college was one of my first major investments. While the cost was a hard pill to swallow, it was ultimately worth it to have a comfortable home base.
Aside from the initial investment, here are a few other things to consider:
- How do you sleep? Certain types of beds are better depending on your position. If you sleep on your side, you want something with innerspring or with built-in pressure release points. Stomach sleepers don’t want something too soft that you feel like you’re being smothered/enveloped. Those who sleep on your back, want something in the middle.
- Is there a lot of movement? If either you or your partner moves around a lot in your sleep or have to get up at different times, you’ll want a mattress that has good motion isolation.
- Do you get hot at night? No one likes night sweats. While there are plenty of things to help this – such as specific sheets – some mattresses are better than others. Consider a mattress that holds less body heat (aka not foam) or choose one that touts cooling properties. The Purple Hybrid supposedly has great airflow.
- What is the trial period? A lot of mattresses, especially those bought online, allow you to sleep a certain number of nights on the bed as a trial. If you don’t like the mattress, you can return it for a refund.
I think we all know that we should be getting more sleep + better sleep. I’ve realized my biggest struggle with my morning routine is actually my evening/bedtime routine. As I am trying to improve that, I would love to know what is part of yours!
