If there are two things in this world I am into it is FRIENDS + the enneagram. I discovered + devoured FRIENDS in college. I related very strongly to Monica throughout my 20s. My boyfriend will even recall me telling him on our first date that I was a “total Monica.” Since FRIENDS character relations is not really a social science worth studying, I have taken a dive into the enneagram to learn more about myself. It is no surprise then that I wanted to type the characters of my all-time favorite show.
FRIENDS Enneagram Types
Monica: The Reformer (1). It deeply pained me not to have a matching enneagram with Monica because I think we are so similar. But alas, I am a three + she is so obviously a one. Not only is she a perfectionist, but she is also very principled with herself + others. Monica prides herself on being the best hostess – even when it means slaving over a Thanksgiving meal or having 11 types of towels.
Rachel: The Achiever (3). While I don’t strongly identify with Rachel when I watch the show, it is hard to ignore how she is a textbook three. Her personality changes a great deal over the show but when you look at her arc, you see all that she accomplished through her ambition + perseverance. She is very image-conscious + adapts to challenges as she faces them. She can also be a bit dramatic + moody (#sorrynotsorry).
Phoebe: The Peacemaker (9). There are several episodes that showcase Phoebe’s strong propensity for bringing her friends together + avoiding conflict. She is even willing to flash a crowd so that Monica’s parents don’t realize she is drunk. Phoebe is the most laid back + agreeable of all the characters. She has her weird quirks but is accepting of others’ quirks as well. A lot of this likely stems from her rough childhood.
Chandler: The Loyalist (6). Due to his chaotic childhood, Chandler is desperate for validation + stability. This also makes him risk-averse which causes him to keep going back to women (Janice) who are familiar + why he made a temp job he didn’t like a career. He is a little bit anxious + suspicious of new things + people but he eventually comes around, usually at the prodding of others.
Ross: The Investigator (5). In hindsight, Ross is one of the more interesting + polarizing members on the show. He is super intelligent, but he constantly overthinks to his own detriment. He can often be a bit too black + white in this thinking. This, of course, can lead to him coming off as a bit cerebral + cause him to be isolated as he watches opportunities pass him by if they arent 100% perfect.
Joey: The Enthusiast (7). The life of the party, Joey is the most spontaneous + fun-loving of all the characters; he is also a bit scattered. Joey can make anything fun from throwing a ball for hours + hours to being in a beach house with no entertainment. Despite his wonderful personality, he never ends up in a longterm relationship, mostly due to his lack of commitment.
Since the FRIENDS haven’t taken an enneagram test, there is of course no way to be totally sure of their type, but I think this is a good start. Not sure of your enneagram type? Take this free test! Then use it to discover where you should travel next + get some great self-care tips.
